Guild Hall is an arts, entertainment, and education center for the community. Its primary focus is to inform, inspire, and enrich our diverse audiences by presenting programs of the highest quality in the visual and performing arts, to collaborate with artists of Eastern Long Island, to foster the artistic spirit and to provide a meeting place for all.

Full of Noises is a self-guided soundwalk for the Village of East Hampton that leads the public through known spaces with new, heightened, and playful listening.  
 
Composed and narrated by sound artist, Viv Corringham, Full of Noises links the cultural gifts of Mary Woodhouse - Guild Hall, The Duck Pond, and Clinton Academy -, with prompts for finding, imagining, and remembering sounds. Simply download the free app. on your phone, pop-in a pair of headphones, and listen.

Guild Hall is an arts, entertainment, and education center for the community. Its primary focus is to inform, inspire, and enrich our diverse audiences by presenting programs of the highest quality in the visual and performing arts, to collaborate with artists of Eastern Long Island, to foster the artistic spirit and to provide a meeting place for all.

Guild Hall, one of the first multidisciplinary centers in the country to combine a museum, theater, and education space under one roof, was established in 1931 as a gathering place for community where an appreciation for the arts would serve to encourage greater civic participation. For nearly nine decades, Guild Hall has embraced this open-minded vision and provided a welcoming environment for the public to engage with art exhibitions, performances, and educational offerings. Art and artists have long been the engine of Guild Hall’s activities and the institution continues to find innovative ways to support creativity in everyone.

In 1930, East Hampton resident and philanthropist Mrs. Lorenzo E. Woodhouse anonymously dedicated land and an initial financial gift toward building one of the country’s first interdisciplinary centers. Her vision was “to heighten the importance of the arts” and provide a building that would “serve as meeting place.” The community rallied to secure additional funding, as well as manage and oversee the development and maintenance of a new facility.

Our intention on this sound walk is to consciously listen, letting our eyes take a break and relax their gaze. This encourages a different focus of attention. We can just let in the ordinary, everyday sounds that we hear around us. This is a meditative practice -of being inclusive, not judging, accepting what is, here and now. Open your ears. Resolve not to speak. Let your gaze be soft. Through our walking feet we can listen for traces of previous walkers, for stories from the earth, for echoes of history, and for our own memories. The essence of a place is revealed to the feet that move through it and listen.

Let's walk as slowly as possible. Listening is a full body experience, so imagine that all the sounds you hear are flowing up through your feet, vibrating your bones and body. Notice if different sounds resonate different parts of your body.

Here we are in what was once a Japanese Water Garden, given by Emma Woodhouse to her niece Mary, who gave it to her Garden Club, who gave it to East Hampton village for a nature trail and bird sanctuary. It’s now affectionately known as Duck Pond.

Let’s sit and simply listen to the sounds around us. I’d like to do a guided listening based on Sonic Images, a series of questions by composer Pauline Oliveros, who taught me her practice of Deep Listening. I’ll read each question and leave a pause for you to consider it. 
We’ll end with a few moments just listening.

*Can you find the quiet place in your mind where thoughts, words and images are simply clouds passing through a clear sky?
*Can you remain in this quiet place by listening to all the sounds you can possibly hear, including the most distant sounds beyond this space?
*Do you ever notice how your ears adjust when you move from one size space to another? or from indoors to outdoors and vice versa?
*Who is very familiar to you? Could you recognise this person only by the sound of their footsteps?
*What is your favourite sound? Can you reproduce it in your mind?
*Can you imagine the distance between any two sounds you are now hearing?
*Can you imagine that you are the centre of a sphere of sound which keeps expanding all the time? No sound is more important than any other-loud, soft, near, far, galactic or microscopic.

And let’s listen for a few moments.
